Prepare, Practice, Perform. Top Tips for Actors and Performers
Be Professional
At auditions they are looking for highly skilled performers.
Enter with Conviction
From the moment you walk in you are being assessed. Walk with confidence - always
Never Make Excuses
They aren’t your friend. Bring your “A” game and leave all baggage at home. They do not want to know your problems.
Read the Guidelines
They may supply you with a piece of text to learn but if they leave it open to you, choose something that is relatable. Choose a character that you connect with and understand. The more you can bring to the table the better!
Be Prepared
Do as much homework as possible on your character. Familiarise yourself with the text, engage with the character and connect with the objectives.
Only Ask Questions if Necessary
Directors are interested in the scene you are about to perform, not your theory about the piece.
What to Wear?
Once you’ve done your research pick what to wear to the audition. Don’t come fully dressed in the character’s costume but rather wear a token related to your character. For example if you were auditioning for Marus in Les Miserables - you wouldn’t come in a full puffy white sleeved shirt and red sash. But rather wear a red t-shirt that fits you well.
Make Choices
Make clear decisions about how you want to play the role and how you deliver it. Directors like to see the Actor make bold choices.Simply reading the text with believable inflection is not enough.
Don’t Apologise
Sometimes things can go wrong under pressure. That is okay! But whatever you do - DON’T make a big deal of it. Always be in control of the scene and carry on. If you need to take a breather do so, compose yourself and continue.
Be prepared to take Direction
Have the piece prepared with a clear line of action. But also be prepared to change elements when asked. Sometimes Directors will ask you to do something which is contrary to how the piece is written. Be open minded about this, and don’t question it- do it to the best of your ability. Often Directors are just testing you to see how well you take direction.
