5 top tips on voice

 

Speaking with clarity

How do we use or voice efficiently? With articulation, diction and clarity. To help with this start with some simple tongue twisters to warm up the voice and prepare you for work. For example: Licking Lemon Lollipops say this through x3 times and quicken the pace each time. 

 

Use your breath

Make sure you support your voice with breath. When you are performing it is important to connect with the breath. Start by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth, relax the body and release tension. Tension will have an effect on the voice Control the breath further by breathing in for 4 counts and out for 4 counts. 

 

Warming up the voice

Move into humming to warm up the voice, before moving onto more complex warm ups. Never start cold. Always warm the voice before performing. You wouldn’t run a race without stretching, same thing applies to your voice it is a muscle. 

 

How to Project the voice

Projecting the voice. This does not mean you should shout. But rather imagine you must fill the room with your voice. Usually the Actor does not have the luxury of a mic, you must use your voice to project out to the audience.

Understanding the role

The character’s voice, once you understand the character you are performing. Play with the textures of the voice. Think about the emotions the character goes through in the text, this will affect the delivery of the voice. Play with your vocal range this makes the character interesting.
