5 top tips on Musical Theatre Song Choice Selection

Guidelines

Firstly check the Audition guidelines, they may have a list of pre-approved songs or they might ask for ballads or a selection of songs with contrasting styles.

Choose the right song

Pick a song that you are confident with. This doesn’t mean picking a song that is easy or in your repertoire. You need to prove to the audition panel why you deserve the role. Select a song you are confident with and connect with.  But don’t pick a song that everyone else is going to pick, choose something different, they need to remember you!

Play to your strengths

If you have a strong chest voice, pick a song that shows this off. Likewise if you have a strong head voice pick a song that shows off the head voice. Show off your range -  you only get one shot at this!

Cutting the song

Once you have found the song you need to cut the music and find the best bit of the song that shows you off. Usually around 16-32 bars. For example you start with the first verse and cut to the last chorus of the song. This is usually the biggest build. The cut should make good musical sense

Do Your Homework!

Pick a song that is in the style, range and character of the role you are auditioning for. But don’t pick a song from the show you are auditioning for (unless this has been requested in the guidelines). Find out what the vocal range of the role is and what style of music it is in.
